Turkey Chronicles, from the Gifts4outdoorsman team.

After a few failed attempts on what we knew to be more than one bird, the winds finally calmed giving us a fighting chance for success.  After about 20 minutes of silence, we finally located some birds, still in their roost, off in the distance.  After setting up our decoys, a jake and a hen, we settled in to try and coax the birds to our hide.
Having hunted turkeys for several decades, I’ve learned that the adage, expect the unexpected, seems to always apply to spring turkeys.  This morning didn’t disappoint.  After our unsuccessful attempts over the past two weeks to get this group to come in, this morning they were off the roost and headed our way within minutes.
By the sound of the gobbles, it was clear that there was more than one bird. They were locked in so we kept the calling to a minimum and just enjoyed the moment.  Once they appeared, we saw a mature tom letting two jakes lead the way – smart bird!  They hung up 60 yards from us for a few minutes as they searched for the hen in the long grass.  Once they spotted her, they came in a straight line; this time the big tom was in the lead – smart bird!  He passed about twenty yards straight ahead, and it was game over at 5:40AM.  Three long unsuccessful attempts and then a hunt that ends after 35 minutes of legal shooting time.
We enjoyed a nice walk back to the truck.
